LIGHTHOUSE PROJECT

My aim was to illustrate the role of the lighthouse to protect and guide sea traffic against the ever changing phenomenon that is the Irish weather and sky, while bringing out the beauty of these structures in the Irish landscape.

In the series of 10 high quality lustre finished archival photographs, The attempt is made to demonstrate the strength of Howth lighthouse standing strong against the backdrop of the urban sunset, its protective wall sheltering her resident’s while providing the welcome home beacon to tired fishermen returning with their catch in the early hours of the morning. Balbriggan lighthouse with her strong arm in the north county pier against the backdrop of the stormy Irish sky’s ready to protect the harbour from the might of the Irish Sea.

Hookhead lighthouse stands tall on the lonely edge of the Irish landscape providing a powerful light in the midst of the darkness and jagged edge of the southeast while her powerful beams pierce the foggy sky. Baily lighthouse poking her head above the landscape guiding the busy traffic lanes into Dublin port and the strength and might of the Howth beacon against the backdrop of an ever-changing Irish sky.

We also see Dun Laoghaire lighthouse as the storm rolls in, “preparing for the battle of the night ahead” and finishing with Poolbeg light providing guidance to the mightiest of ship’s into Dublin port.

While this collection focuses on the lighthouse’s on the East Coast of Ireland, it is an attempt to demonstrate the importance and beauty of these protectors of the Irish coastline.
